Gardening Tips for Children

Kids already enjoy being outdoors and getting a bit dirty, so why not consider taking the opportunity to get them involved in some gardening. You don’t have to start with anything large – something small is just perfect for children. Allow them to choose the plants they want for their garden by looking through seed catalogs or by taking them through the seed isles in a gardening store. If you want to make sure that your children have fun and enjoy learning more about gardening, here are a few gardening tips for children you can use.

Tip #1 – Allow Kids to Grow a Few Different Plants

One of the top gardening tips for children is to allow kids to grow a few different plants. Make sure you allow them to choose the plants that they want to grow, but since they are starting out small, only go with a few different choices. Kids often choose veggies that they like to eat, but encourage them to go with some flowers as well. Large plants, like sunflowers definitely make a great choice, since kids are sure to love how large they get.

Tip #2 – Get Kids Involved in Planting

Even though seeds are pretty small, another of the gardening tips for children is to allow the kids to get involved in planting. They should be involved with the gardening process from start to finish. If kids are too small to handle the smallest seeds, allow them to be involved by covering up the seeds with the soil when planting takes place.

Tip #3 – Place the Garden Somewhere Easy to See

It’s definitely important that you place your kid’s garden somewhere that is easy for them to see. You want to ensure that they are going to see it on a regular basis, so put it in an area where your children tend to play on a regular basis, making sure it gets enough sun. As they see the garden on a regular basis, they’ll be able to take note of all the changes that are going on as their plants begin to grow. A good size for a beginner garden is about 4′x4′. However, even if you don’t have a yard large enough, even a container garden can be a great option for the gardening project.

Tip #4 – Let Kids Get Dirty

Kids love getting dirty and playing around in the dirt, so remember that one of the top gardening tips for children is to just let them get dirty out there in the garden. If the soil needs some preparation, allow them to be involved in this part of the process. You can also purchase some gardening tools that are kid sized so they can feel like they are a bigger part of the process as they work with their own tools in the garden.

Tip #5 – Don’t Forget About Watering

Watering is going to be important as well, and since kids love water, let them have some fun with this task. Of course, remember that one of the gardening tips for children you definitely need to follow is to avoid giving them a hose to water the garden. This will probably lead to disaster. It’s a better option to arm them with a small watering can. Take the time to show them how to properly water the plants, gently watering right near the plant roots for the best results.

Tip #6 – Identify the Garden and Plants

Both the garden and the plants should be identified. First, make sure you allow the kids to make the garden their own. It’s a good idea to allow them to make a sigh that shows that it is their garden. This allows kids to feel proud of their accomplishments. Not only should the garden be identified, but it’s a good idea to identify plants as well, putting up seed packets or tags so kids know which plants are located in each area of the garden.

Tip #7 – Have Patience and Allow Them to Make Mistakes

Last, one of the most important gardening tips for children that you need to remember is to have some patience and allow your children to make mistakes in their garden. You need to simply be patient and allow your kids to have total control in the garden. Allow them to make messes and big mistakes, but be there to offer some guidance if they need it. As they make mistakes, they’ll learn important lessons about gardening, which is the most important part of this process.
